Volunteers are matched with a family for 3 - 6 months (6 months with twins) and are asked to:

  1. Be available 2 days a week for the first month, 1 day a week for the second and third month, with each visit lasting 1.5 to 2 hours depending on the needs of the family.
  2. Have a notarized NM State background check - $5.00 notary, $12.00 BG check  (reimbursed after 3 month commitment)
  3. Provide your own  transporation.
  4. Have the ability to listen, be non-judgemental, not have a personal agenda (as in "babies should be raised THIS way!") and have the ability to "hold space" for a mother.
  5. Attend volunteer meetings once a month (it is a great way to share experiences and be connected to the group as a whole) and read email notices.

Pat will want to know what would make a good match for you. For instance, some volunteers only want "baby contact"; others enjoy helping with whatever the family needs. This might include accompanying a mother to a doctor's visit, caring for the infant and/or siblings while the mom gets respite, folding laundry or preparing a meal. (Many Mothers is not a babysitting or maid service and this is made clear to the families.) Infant experience isn't always necessary. We have had volunteers great with toddlers but unfamiliar with babies, so they were matched with families with multiple children where the mom was comfortable with the lack of the volunteer's baby experience. It's been successful!

In choosing to give your time and energy it is important to us that your experience as a voluteer is a satisfying one.
